Help shape new research on standing frame support for people with MS

Trustee Sally Plumb, PhD Health Science Student & Registered Nurse, has invited us to share an opportunity for people with lived experience of multiple sclerosis to take part in research led by the University of Plymouth.

The ISUMS Implementation Toolkit (Implementing Standing frame Use in Multiple Sclerosis) aims to make standing frames more accessible and consistently available across the NHS, by creating a pack of resources including videos, checklists, patient information leaflets and training tools.

Sally said: “This project is really exciting. It builds on the Standing up with Multiple Sclerosis (SUMS) research that the University of Plymouth carried out in Devon. This is the next stage. Now we are looking at how we can put it into practice, and help NHS teams offer this service more easily and smoothly.”

The SUMS research shows that supported standing can improve mobility, reduce symptoms such as spasms and bladder issues, and help people feel more independent. However, access to standing frames varies widely, and many services face practical barriers.

To ensure the toolkit reflects real experiences and genuine needs, the research team is looking for people living with MS to join our community feedback group.

You are invited to join a large, flexible group offering feedback at specific stages, such as reviewing draft resources, wording, visual design or accessibility. There is no ongoing commitment, and people can take part whenever time and energy allow. This is likely to be hosted in a closed online space. All that is need is your opinions and enthusiasm.

If you would like to find out more or express interest in joining,

Contact: sally.plumb@plymouth.ac.uk

By taking part, you will help ensure future NHS standing‑frame provision is more practical, equitable and informed by the MS community.
